Blog Industrial remote monitoring: regulations, opportunities, advantages

In this article, we discuss how remote monitoring can improve efficiency, safety, and the management of industrial plants in the era of Industry 4.0.

With the advancement of Industry 4.0, remote monitoring of industrial plants has become a key tool, regulated by European Directives to ensure safety and efficiency. This system allows operators to control plants via remote commands, even without direct supervision, provided that strict safety rules define when and how it can be applied.

Remote monitoring is allowed only if the following conditions are met:

  • The machine is visible to the operator

  • The plant is not located near other operators who could be exposed to risks from remote intervention

  • Alarms are never silenced, ensuring timely alerts for immediate action when needed

  • The remotely monitored machine area is protected and inaccessible to operators or bystanders, with appropriate warning signs displayed

  • Only one control station is active at a time

  • Parameter changes for machine operation are confirmed locally on-site

  • Software connections allow access only to the selected machine

  • A stable network is in place to minimize transmission errors

  • Remote connection is only possible with prior authorization from the local operator

All standards regulating remote monitoring derive from the European Directives UNI EN ISO 10218-2:2011 and UNI EN ISO 13849-1:2016.

In Italy, the National Transition Plan 4.0, tied to the Recovery Fund, aims to stimulate private investments and provide businesses with certainty. Active from November 2020 to June 2023, the plan offers incentives for companies investing in upgrading their plants to Industry 4.0 standards, including the adoption of remote monitoring and advanced technologies.

The advantages of remote monitoring

But what are the real benefits of adopting Industry 4.0 and remote monitoring of machinery?

  • Improved plant efficiency

  • Reduced time to market, from production to sales

  • Lower operating costs

  • Better human resource management

  • Enhanced industrial competitiveness

  • Reduced waste

  • Higher product quality

  • Full process automation

  • More efficient maintenance through predictive data analysis

  • Reduced consumption and pollutant emissions

  • Real-time data and parameter visualization for constant monitoring

  • Less downtime

  • Increased performance

  • Greater safety for both operators and plants
